Annotation

J. Iwaszkiewicz had made his first journey to Petersburg (Leningrad that time) at the age of 77. Shortly after his return the author wrote the essay cycle titled ‘Petersburg’, which reviews life of Polish and Russian writers connected with the city. In the composition Petersburg is the city of art, the city, which induces to become an artist and is conducive to create art. Another meaning of the heterotropia is the Russian Empire capital — the symbol of the tsarist authority. Here Iwaszkiewicz distinguishes the inner plan, in which conflicts between the writer and the authority are taken into consideration and the exterior plan encapsulating Russian-Polish relations.
