Annotation

The ideas and images of the Russian Silver Age played an important role in Akhmatova’s growth as a poet. The present paper focuses on the intellectual and art atmosphere at the end of XIX - the beginning of XX century and on the controversy around Hamlet by Shakespeare, in which well-known writers, critics, philosophers and translators, such as L. Tolstoy, G. Brandes, L. Vygotsky, I. Annensky, L. Shestov, F. Zelinsky participated. The paper considers the ways in which the Shakespeare thesaurus of the fin de siecle is reflected in one of Akhmatova’s verses relating to her reader’s experiences. Poetic cycle “Reading Hamlet” is placed in the context of Shakespearian loci communes. The author of this paper examines transformations of the Shakespearean motives, in particular the significant final component of the second part of the cycle. Shifting the focus of Hamlet on the prince's and Ophelia's love plot, Akhmatova presents Ophelia’s character, which shift through the two parts of cycle. Parallels are drawn with A. Blok's, M. Tsvetaeva’s and A. Rimbaud’s poetry and the series of pictorial works on Hamlet of D.G. Rossetti.
