NEW TESTAMENT IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS IN THE TOLKOVAYA PALEYA

The research deals with the analysis of Russian biblical idiomatic expressions in Old Rus- sian sources. In the text of Tolkovaya Paleya, commenting mainly Pentateuch, we can find the expressions which are going back not only to the text of the Old Testament, but also to the text of the New Testament, because the author-composer of Paleya borrows from Byzantine tradi- tion of a typological principle of interpretation of the Scriptures. A lot of expressions found have parallels in the Gospel According to John as it gives the most explicit picture of Christ's divine nature. It is noteworthy, that the "key" idiomatic expressions specifying Jesus' birth, treachery, resurrection - star ofBethlehem, thirty pieces ofsilver, Peace be unto you, doubting Thomas - are constantly repeated in Paleya text. The author-compiler also compares the New Testament's episodes with each other, relating righteous martyrs' destiny to the context of Christ's life and resurrection that is characteristic of other Slavonic texts. Thus, Tolkovaya Paleya, the text which is not translated directly from the Greek original, is important linguistic source for the study of Russian biblical idiomatic expressions.
