Annotation

The article discusses principles and methods of ironical, including sarcastic, imaging of reality in Russian and English literature of the 19th-20th centuries. Works by I. A. Krylov, A. S. Pushkin, N. V. Gogol, I. A. Goncharov, A. A. Akhmatova, W. Thackeray, J. Galsworthy, S. Maugham and others have served as basis for this consideration. The irony is understood as a category of poetics as well as a stylistic method and pathos (modus).
