Annotation
The article compares the values and character development features of the main characters of the “A Common Story” and “Der Nachsommer”. Goncharov presents the world as a place of struggle. Stifter portrays the world as something harmonious. According to Goncharov, the formation of a person’s personality occurs by overcoming difficulties and understanding his mistakes, in Stifter – through knowledge of the world and the development of the ability to see and appreciate beauty. Both authors consider it necessary to balance the rational and emotional principles in a person. But Goncharov considers the “heart” to be the most important thing, from which virtues flow. And for Stifter, the ideal is a life based on a reasonable order. The feelings of his characters are weakly expressed and subordinated to the domination of the mind. The style of both authors is distinguished by attention to detail, but in Goncharov they are a means of expressing the psychology of the characters, and in Stifter they are striving to recreate the completeness of the picture of the world.
