Annotation

The article deals with Russian negative idioms. Their semantics, ways and means of ex- pressing negation are described. Idioms are determined as a special means of negation in lan- guage. The main peculiarity of negative idioms is that the negation in them can be expressed by formal means of negation (explicit negation) and without formal markers (implicit negation) and it is always emotional, expressive, flat. The implicit way of expressing negation is used much more frequently in idioms than in free combinations of words. This can be explained by figurativeness ofidioms and their specific features as special language phenomena. Three types of idioms are determined in the article: idioms with explicit negation, idioms with implicit negation and idioms with formal means of negation which have no negative meaning. The criteria for determination of negation in idioms with implicit negation are worked out. The author supposes that negative idioms should be classified as a formal means of negation. Key words: idiom, negation, linguistic category of negation, explicit negation, implicit negation, formai means ofnegation.
