Annotation

The article looks into the little-known period in the evolution of Russian standardized pronunciation, namely the guidelines outlined in A.A. Barsov’s works among which is his recently published “Russian Grammar” (written in 1783–88). The clash between sacral and mundane approaches to culture resulted in variations in pronunciation which in its turn called for normalization. In analyzing this process A.A. Barsov develops ideas which were first introduced by V.K. Trediakovsky and M.V. Lomonosov.
