Annotation
This article focuses on problems of reflection of English literature of
the 17th–18th centuries in N. M. Karamzin’s Letters of a Russian Traveler.
Karamzin’s evaluations of English writers from W. Shakespeare to poets-sentimentalists of the beginning of the 18th century were analyzed. The meaning
of the quotes and reminiscences from the works by J. Thomson in the creative structure of “Letters of Russian Traveller” are defined and the role of
Karamzin’s statements about English literature in the formation of a holistic
image of England in the Russian culture of the late 18th– early 19th centuries
is identified.
