Annotation
The article considers the opinions of scientists from Russia, Britain,
Hungary, Germany, the USA, France, and Japan. At the center of their attention there is the problem of irony in the novels by Goncharov. Up to the
end of the 20th century, science was dominated by the notion that the most
striking modus in the novels of the writer is the comic one. However, such
ideas contradicted with the idea that novels are deeply dramatic works. The
article shows how the professionals, who belong to different cultures and
different scientific schools, come to understand the importance of irony in
Goncharov’s novels, because irony is a tool to achieve both the comic and the
dramatic effect
