Annotation

The article explores neologisms in the mass media using the material of the Internet press of 2016–2017, namely, the Russian language newspapers of Lithuania “Review” and “Lithuanian Courier”. A brief description and characteristics of the neologisms are given, and the semantics of the investigated neologisms as well as the sources of their formation are indicated. In the paper, neologisms arising in the sphere of computer technologies are examined in a more detailed way. The results of the study show that in the field of computer technology the bulk of neologisms are lexical neologisms. Moreover, the Anglicisms which arose together with the realities of the last decade are actively used in the mass media.

Computer technology is rapidly developing which in turn contributes to the emergence of new items and new lexical names it nominates these items. Thus, for example, only in the newspaper “Obzor” in the period from January 28, 2016 to March 16, 2016 we find 90 neologisms: crypto community, bitcoin, blockchain, software, crypto industry, smart business, 5G communication, press release, twitter, memes, startup, startups, crowd sourcing startups, crypto entrepreneurs, electric car, chips, microchips, etc. Approximately the same number of neologisms is observed in the “Lithuanian Courier”. Moreover, it should be noted that for the most part the neologisms are used in all functional styles of speech (image, case, liberal-democratic, interbank). Many neologisms belong to scientific, journalistic, business or colloquial functional styles: in the last decade, a significant number of neologisms, in particular Anglicisms, has appeared in the Russian language. This is a natural phenomenon since this process is associated with interlingual contacts, the impact of external factors, the correlation with public as well as political processes, and, of course, the internal factors of the language itself. The use of Anglicisms can perhaps be justified only if they do not have analogs in the Russian language and fill in so to say empty “niches” in Russian texts. Thus, journalists in their articles should use neologisms more thoughtfully and where it is really necessary, since in Russian there are many beautiful words of the Russian literary language with different connotations for determining reality.

It is the Internet press that clearly displays a large flow of borrowed words and is thus an object of study for linguists.
