Annotation
Recently the linguistic means of author's self-expression as the subject of a text has become an especially relevant topic in philological investigations. The article under discussion presents one of the possible attempts to relate explication of the author's position to parentheses. The linguistic analysis of texts extracted from the writings of V. Suloukhin shows that parentheses can be treated not only as stylistic and structural elements of the text, but as a means of author‘s self expression as well. They help to render the author's and character's identity / nonidentity, to define relation between the two sides of discourse subjects, i.e. a real text-creating subject and a fictitious character of the text.
In the article grammatical significance of parentheses is related to the category of subjective modality.
