Annotation
The article deals with the problem of typological unity of Dante's "The Divine Comedy"
and Goncharov's novel trilogy. The Russian writer's deep interest to Dante's thought arose at
his Moscow university years under the influence of young professor S.P. Shevyrev. The author
of this article supposes Shevyrev's interpretation of "The Divine Comedy" to be the base of
Goncharov's future aesthetics and philosophy, art philosophy. Goncharov like Dante (in this
interpretation) divided the process of human life into three parts, "periods" or "pictures": "a
common story", "a dream" and "an awakening". These "pictures" correspond with three novels
of Goncharov's trilogy. The author of this article investigates the typological relationship be-
tween central parts of "The Divine Comedy" and novel trilogy - "The Purgatory" and "Oblomov".
