Annotation

The article deals with the semantic opposition own – alien as one of the most significant elements of both the national picture of the world and national culture in general. The opposition occupies a significant role in a great number of different believes, customs, in domestic practice and social life, in religious and family etiquette. The author of the article gives special attention to a multilevel system of ‘identification signals’ found in bylinas and claims that the prevailing number of proper nouns exposes historically reliable anthroponyms, ethnonyms and real toponyms. The tendency to distinguish between western and eastern neighbours on the basis of their titles which were common for representatives of the authority is evident in the epic tradition. The article thoroughly investigates the world of bylinas during the period of the ‘kings’ reign’.
