Literary Сriticism

Authors

Annotation

The article deals with the question of how similar or opposite Oblomov is to Goethe’s Faust. As the hero of the Russian novel, he goes back to the above mentioned literary archetype, but, being a Russian version of Faust, he is not so much contrasted with the German one and offers the answers to Faustian questions on the basis of his national experience and traditions. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that Goncharov does not see modern life without Faustian doubt, they are the key to human viability. There are also founded parallels in the article with the story of the first and second parts of “Faust”, as well as traces of analogy between Olga and Gretchen, Agafya Matveevna and Elena.
