Annotation

The main problems of human being reflected in I. Goncharov’s novel are projected onto the situation of a modern man in the play written by M. Ugarov. The playwright uses direct quotes from the original text and his own ideas as well which reveal the eternal dilemma: the human unity is incompatible with the concept of specialization, high human feelings are defined as diseases. This new and central motif of the play (disease) is analyzed through some others, including the motif of game and naming, which are highlighted and re-interpreted by Ugarov.
